CHAPTER 8: A Day in the Life of a Thrift Hunter

The Art of the Intuitive Find

Can you believe it? We're standing on the edge of a new year. As we prepare to turn the page and set new goals, it’s the perfect time to drop old habits and embrace new ways of doing things—especially when it comes to our closets. For me, that means doubling down on my mission to fight fast fashion.

When I started curating the looks for The 2nd Story, I went through a huge learning curve. I tried to guess what other people would like. I quickly realized the most important thing I could do was be authentic. So, instead of trying to please everyone, I started looking for what truly speaks to me when I sift through the shelves.

I've been told I have a gift for spotting the unique and pairing the unthought-of possibilities, and I want to walk you through that process. Because, after all, I can’t fight fast fashion alone—I need your help! Let's make sustainable style a core New Year's revolution together.

The Intuitive Hunt: Listening to Your Gut

My thrifting journey is less about a rigid checklist and more about going with the flow. I listen to my gut and feel things out. I’m a very intuitive person, and that’s my superpower in a thrift store.

The reality is, you can’t go through each and every piece of clothing... and ain’t nobody got time for that! Efficiency is key when you’re battling the massive tide of textile waste.

Rule 1: Scanning for Statements (It Always Starts with Pattern)

My first step is always to scan and pan for what stands out. And for me, that usually starts with pattern.

Pattern is a visual magnet. If it catches my eye—a unique plaid, a dramatic floral, or an unexpected geometric design—it goes into the cart.

Rule 2: The Quality Check (Texture Matters)

Once a piece is flagged for its bold pattern, I move in to check the texture and fabric quality.

Now, being real, there are a lot of very cute pieces that fast fashion produces. If I find an item from a current brand, you know what? We’re keeping that from the landfill. The goal is circularity! I look for quality fabric—anything that drapes nicely, feels luxurious, or has substantial texture. When I land upon something that I feel is unique—be it pattern, style, or fabric—then I assess the potential fit.

Rule 3: The Thrill of the Immediate Snag

This is where the true thrifting adrenaline kicks in! When I find a piece that I feel is unique and high quality, I snag it. Why? Because the thrill of thrifting is knowing that if you don't get it, it could very well be gone by the time you go back. That fleeting scarcity is exactly what makes the items I select for The 2nd Story so incredibly special.

The Daydreaming Inventory: Curating the Next Chapter

Once I have my finds, I don't always know what I'm going to do with them right away. If I don't have something in mind to pair it with, the piece gets added to my "daydreaming inventory."

It sits, waiting for the perfect partner—a complementary color, a contrasting texture, or a needed silhouette—to complete its story. This slow, thoughtful pairing is where the magic of the curated outfits happens.

Follow along on social media to see clips of the process, from the thrilling haul to the final outfit reveal!
