CHAPTER 14: Empty Cups

Image
I recently took a much-needed mental health day. My schedule has been non-stop lately with end-of-year activities and getting ready for my son’s graduation. It’s a cliché because it’s true: You cannot pour from an empty cup. Between the personal milestones, I’ve been working on styling costumes for my daughter’s end-of-year choir pop show. Coordinating 15 songs and outfits for 18 kids is no small task! While I am truly enjoying this chapter and the time I get to spend with them, I realized I needed a reprieve. When I need a little quiet time and a fresh spark of inspiration, I do what I do best: I head to the thrift store. My journey recently brought me to Best Dressed Wallflower in Old East Dallas—my old stomping grounds! I met with the owner, Karalyne, who is a stylist herself. She has taken so much time to carefully curate some of the most beautiful vintage pieces I have ever seen. We mixed, we matched, and we created balance and character out of anything and everything. We pu...

CHAPTER 13: The Anti- Formula Formula

Image
Chapter 16: The Anti-Formula Formula I am all about the explosion of personal styling on social media right now! It is so exciting to see people leaning into self-expression. Lately, I’ve been seeing a massive uptick in "outfit formulas." And while I think those are great for some people, for others... they just don’t work. For me, the word "formula" takes the whimsy out of styling. My brain immediately jumps to words like homework, rigid, or restrictive . I might get some beef for this! Some people 100% need a step-by-step on how to structure an outfit, and that is wonderful. I am not bashing that approach at all. But my ADHD brain sees a detailed formula and immediately halts. It feels like too much info and not enough soul. Surely, I can’t be the only one who feels this way! Several influencers have gone viral lately with these "how-tos," but I believe personal style should be felt . Now, I do have certain... let's call them inclinations (insert f...

CHAPTER 12: The Art of the Mix: Texture, Tension, and the Band Tee

Image
I have a deep-seated love for balance. But for me, balance isn't about everything matching— it’s about  the tension created by mixing two opposing styles, vibes, or textures. I live for the "mismatch" that somehow feels exactly right. The classic band tee is the perfect canvas for this. It’s a staple, but it doesn't have to stay in the "jeans and sneakers" lane. This week, I took my favorite Pink Floyd classic and styled it three ways to prove that when you play with opposites, a thrifted tee becomes high-end art. 1. The Satin & Stud Balance This look is the ultimate study in rough vs. smooth . I paired the cotton band tee with a chartreuse satin skirt. This is a personal favorite because it creates a "Rock-Luxe" vibe. The chartreuse and the black of the shirt are high-contrast, but the magic is in the materials. The silkiness of the skirt elevates the worn-in feel of the tee, while the studded boots add the necessary "grit." It’s eff...

Chapter 11: The Epiphany

Creating a Secondhand Home In two weeks, my husband and I will have lived in our house for two years. What a ride these past two years have been. Milestones, deaths, celebrations, losing jobs, and starting businesses—a lot can happen in 730 days. There were many unexpected events; some were amazing, and others I would have rather never experienced. Still I would not take any of them back. Each experience has led me to where I am today. Through it all, we have been making this house our home. It feels funny to say that, knowing we plan on moving states in a few years, but what I mean is more of a feeling than a permanent location. It’s about creating the feeling of home . We originally moved into our previous house to take care of my grandmother when she was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It was a quick decline, but I will never regret the memories (both the good and the bad). The time I spent with her is time I will never get back. My time with her came to an abrupt end, we h...

CHAPTER 10: Symphony, Style, and the Art of Being Present

Image
We kicked off my husband's 40th-birthday celebration early this week. It is a milestone year that deserves a major celebration. Honestly, I wouldn't be where I am without this man's unwavering support, so he deserves a whole chapter of his own! We started the day with a slow morning and coffee at our favorite local shop. We’ve come to really value that quiet time together. As my kids get older, the way we spend time together has changed. Every stage has its pros and cons, but witnessing them actually absorb an experience and be fully present is something truly special. We’ve been talking about this specific event for weeks: The Dallas Symphony Orchestra performing Danny Elfman’s scores from Tim Burton’s films. They played music from Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and The Nightmare Before Christmas . It was a total nostalgia dump. I loved watching the crowd get into it; it’s amazing to see people come toget...

CHAPTER 9: The Origin Story- Mystery, Magazines, and a Boy Scout Vest

Image
I’ve been trying to pinpoint exactly when my love for expression and thrifting began. To tell the truth, it’s always been there. I was recently challenged to write out my "origin story," which makes me sound a bit like a comic book character—but in a way, I guess I am. For a long time, I thought the spark started in high school. I remembered finding a discarded Boy Scout vest, covered in all the patches the previous owner had achieved. It looked so cool . I couldn’t help but wonder: Who wore this? What did they do to earn these? I couldn’t tell exactly what every patch was for, and I loved that mystery. Not knowing who wore it was part of the magic. Back then, my ultimate goal was to stand out. I loved getting feedback—everything from "Where did you find that?" to "What are you even wearing?" I didn't necessarily do it for attention; I did it because I knew it was different. But recently, a memory popped into my head from even earlier—something I ha...
