CHAPTER 9: The Origin Story- Mystery, Magazines, and a Boy Scout Vest

I’ve been trying to pinpoint exactly when my love for expression and thrifting began. To tell the truth, it’s always been there. I was recently challenged to write out my "origin story," which makes me sound a bit like a comic book character—but in a way, I guess I am.

For a long time, I thought the spark started in high school. I remembered finding a discarded Boy Scout vest, covered in all the patches the previous owner had achieved. It looked so cool. I couldn’t help but wonder: Who wore this? What did they do to earn these? I couldn’t tell exactly what every patch was for, and I loved that mystery. Not knowing who wore it was part of the magic.

Back then, my ultimate goal was to stand out. I loved getting feedback—everything from "Where did you find that?" to "What are you even wearing?" I didn't necessarily do it for attention; I did it because I knew it was different.

But recently, a memory popped into my head from even earlier—something I had completely forgotten.

I remembered sitting on the floor with stacks and stacks of my mom’s huge fashion magazines. I would find the most bizarre photos or outfits, cut them out, and stick them all over my walls. It wasn’t the label or the designer I was chasing; it was the art. I was after the movement, the feeling, the expression, the color, and the pattern. I've always felt that if you can’t make "cheap" clothing look good, you can’t make "expensive" clothing look good, either. (And I use those terms very loosely!)

I would pull whatever grabbed my attention from those pages—the color, the pattern—and then I’d go to my own closet to try and find similar pieces to recreate the vibe. I was so determined not to be another victim of "copy/paste" fashion that I even made my own dress for prom. Looking back, that was one of the few moments in my life where I was truly able to connect with my mom. Inadvertently, she was the initial driving force that fueled this fire.

I have always enjoyed figuring things out on my own. I feel so much more satisfied when I’m faced with a challenge where the answer isn't obvious. The journey of figuring it out—and the growth that happens along the way—is my favorite part.

Fast forward to today, and my passion and mission are full steam ahead. I am beyond excited for this journey. I have so many ideas, and I can’t wait to see where this road takes The 2nd Story. To the few who may end up reading this: Thank you. Thank you for following along.

We need to create more community and connect with others. I hope to find more people along the way who share this excitement for the little histories and treasures that thrifting has to offer.

Stay Chic,
