CHAPTER 10: Symphony, Style, and the Art of Being Present
We kicked off my husband's 40th-birthday celebration early this week. It is a milestone year that
deserves a major celebration. Honestly, I wouldn't be where I am without this man's unwavering support, so he deserves a whole chapter of his own!
We started the day with a slow morning and coffee at our favorite local shop. We’ve come to really value that quiet time together. As my kids get older, the way we spend time together has changed. Every stage has its pros and cons, but witnessing them actually absorb an experience and be fully present is something truly special.
We’ve been talking about this specific event for weeks: The Dallas Symphony Orchestra performing Danny Elfman’s scores from Tim Burton’s films. They played music from Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
It was a total nostalgia dump. I loved watching the crowd get into it; it’s amazing to see people come together over music. In a time where so much seems to be forcing us further apart, these common threads of art make us feel connected again.
Then, Danny Elfman showed up! Not figuratively—he actually made a guest appearance during the Nightmare Before Christmas segment. What incredible energy! He performed his parts from the film and put on quite a show. I wish I could have snuck more pictures, but they aren't allowed during the performance. I didn’t mind, though. It forced me to be entirely in the moment—just absorbing the massive, amazing sounds of the symphony. I’ll admit, I totally teared up during a few of those tunes. Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands are at the very top of my favorite movies list.
But it wasn’t just about the music; it was the style. People dressed up! They got into it.I absolutely love these types of events. Some might think it’s "obnoxious" to dress up, but the truth is, we don't really do it as a society anymore—and what a shame that is. Now, don't get me wrong, I am all about being comfortable. Comfort is a vital part of personal style. I know that firsthand; I’m still basing my own outfits on which shoes I can wear while I work on my ankle mobility post-surgery.
But what a gift it is to be able to "show up and show out." People arrived in black-and-white, Beetlejuice-esque stripes. They came dressed as Sally. They came in stunning vintage and retro outfits. It was a beautiful array of people expressing their individuality while being connected by a shared love for the music.
This is why I find style so important. It is meant to express YOU. Wear what you want and be yourself. Slow fashion and slow mornings are becoming the pillars of the life I’m building.
Happy birthday to my sweet husband. I wouldn’t be where I am without the support you give me every single day.
Stay Chic,
Gabriella Dolce The 2nd Story
